Physiotherapy is utilized for patients who suffer from specific conditions to improve their quality of life, by either partially or fully restoring function to the body’s system. Physiotherapy includes a diverse array of medical services that are designed to improve and promote a body’s optimal mobility and physical performance. Physiotherapy is also utilized to help relieve and manage physical pain, as well as aiding the body’s rehabilitation process.

Physiotherapy is recommended when a person is suffering from health problems that make moving or doing everyday tasks painful or impossible. Physiotherapy is designed to help our patients regain mobility in their bodies and relieve their pain caused by muscle and joint problems. For athletes and people wanting to keep fit, physiotherapy is very helpful at keeping muscles from cramping and bodies in top shape.

At Evergreen, our goal is to make our patients’ daily tasks and activities easier so they can continue living a healthy, active lifestyle. We also recommend physiotherapy for patients recovering from certain surgeries, arthritis, or chronic pulmonary disease. While physiotherapy can be used as a standalone treatment, it can also be used in conjunction with other services.

Manual Therapy

Manual Therapy utilizes a certain pattern of hand movements that can be used to first locate the problem and then treat the body’s muscle tissue. Manual therapeutic techniques are designed to relax tense muscles and rehabilitate restricted joints. This method can also be used to lessen spinal or back pain and increase the body’s flexibility.
At our physiotherapy clinic in Coquitlam, two of the most effective techniques we offer are soft tissue manipulation and deep tissue manipulation. Soft tissue manipulation, which includes massage, applies pressure to the soft tissues and the body musculature. This form of pressure manipulation is known to help relax muscles, increase circulation, break up scar tissue, and bring relief to muscle pain.

Our second common technique, deep tissue manipulation, utilizes measured movements of differentiating speed, power/force, area of the body or joint manipulation and setting. This particular set of techniques is used to help loosen tight tissues around a joint, as well as to relieve joint or tissue pain and help with flexibility and alignment.

Sports injury physiotherapy

Sports injury physiotherapy is a special subset of physiotherapy that deals with sports-related problems and injuries. Injuries from sports activities are not the same as everyday injuries. This is because in sports, there are commonly high demands placed on a person's muscles, joints, and bones.

Sports injuries happen at any age and all levels of sport and recreational activity. These injuries can be caused by accidents, structural abnormalities, poor posture while exercising, poor core strength and awareness and/or inadequate training/warm-up methods.

At Evergreen Rehab and Wellness, our sports physiotherapists are here to help our athletic patients recover and relieve their pain from sports-related injuries. In addition, we provide education and a diverse array of resources to help you prevent sports-related injuries and problems. Our sports physiotherapists utilize their specific knowledge, enabling them to properly assess and treat all sport-related injuries whether they are acute, chronic or due to overuse.

At Evergreen Rehab and Wellness, we are committed to addressing and relieving sporting injuries as early as the first session. Our goal is to help our patients get back to their healthy lives as soon as possible.

Motor Vehicle Physiotherapy

Getting into a motor vehicle accident is always a traumatic experience, particularly when injuries are sustained. Unfortunately, for many accident victims, the path back to health can be a long and arduous one. At Evergreen Rehab and Wellness, we try to make everything as easy and accessible as possible for our patients suffering from motor vehicle injuries by beginning with a detailed evaluation.

This evaluation is completed by our skilled, medical staff to understand and evaluate all physical injuries and relating symptoms. Once completed, the patient will receive a treatment plan that is tailor-made to their exact and sometimes unique issues that were identified. Our treatment plans for road traffic accident (RTA) victims are customized to suit individual requirements. When designing a suitable form of therapy, we consider factors such as lifestyle, work, everyday activities, and cognitive impairments. This enables us to create effective treatments which are tailored to suit.

In our locations at Coquitlam and Lougheed, our staff is ready and able to treat any of your motor vehicle injuries, including:

  • Whiplash
  • Back or neck pain/stiffness
  • Fractures or dislocations
  • Muscle strain/tearing/sprains
  • Ligament sprains/tearing/sprains
  • Tendonitis
  • Post cast limb rehabilitation

Prenatal and Postnatal Care

For women who are currently prenatal, pregnant, or postpartum, we at Evergreen Rehab and Wellness offer our pre- and postnatal care programs. Our program is specifically designed to help in preventing and treating back and pelvic pain that is caused by pregnancy. Our program is also suited for those recovering from childbirth. Our physiotherapy program utilizes an intensive, supervised pelvic floor muscle exercise program.

Studies have shown that pregnant women are over 55% more like to keep urinary control while taking this treatment. Additionally, pregnant women are over 30% less likely to leak after childbirth. Studies have also shown that pregnant women who complete a pelvic exercise program were half as likely to leak feces as well, for those pregnant women suffering from that issue.

Here at Evergreen, both pregnant and post-pregnancy mothers who are suffering from lower back, hip, pelvic, hands, and/or back pain are urged to come in and seek treatment. Our methods are time-tested and effective, specializing in mitigating or eliminating problems associated with pregnancy. Our program includes:

  • Educating patients on their symptoms and their causes
  • Education on posture
  • Utilizing exercises to aid in strengthening and conditioning pelvic muscles through floor exercises
  • Utilizing belts or compression pants for the best results
  • Education and advice on the use of alternating heat/ice
  • Advice on the activities and positions patients should avoid to keep pain and stress levels down

Once a pregnancy is completed outside of the standard medical issues, there are a large number of outside problems that a post-pregnant patient may be suffering from. Physiotherapists are trained to mitigate or relieve these problems through:

  • First examining and understanding our patient’s problems through an assessment on the patient's abdominal and pelvic issues, as well as the changes to the patient's body that have manifested as a result of pregnancy, labour and delivery
  • Examining a patient's bladder or bowel issues for treatment preparation
  • Educating our patients about their bodies’ problems and which treatment plan is best for them
  • Teaching our patients certain exercises designed to improve their pelvic muscles and patients’ coordination
  • Support and treatment for mastitis and blocked ducts by supplying braces and devices

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is a form of physiotherapy where our experts stimulate certain areas of the body with low-intensity light energy (a laser) to speed up a patient’s body’s natural healing process. Laser therapy utilizes both red and infrared light. When keyed to specific wavelengths using a specific intensity, it can be used to speed the regeneration of the body’s natural healing process.

Laser therapy has been used for 30 years to speed up the body's natural healing processes, in addition to accelerating the cellular regeneration process. Here at Evergreen Rehab and Wellness, we utilize two laser therapy techniques.

Our first technique uses low-intensity lightwaves for medical treatment and rehabilitation. The second treatment technique uses high-intensity light waves used for tissue removal. The laser is delivered via a selection of different lasers, or penetrating-focused lasers used to reach more deeply injured tissue.

Laser therapy using different wavelengths and duration allows our physiotherapists to both penetrate and deliver the lightwave energy to the body’s soft tissue cells directly. The benefits of laser therapy include:

  • Repairing of injured skin
  • Rehabilitation of muscle, ligaments, tendons, and nerves
  • Helps to repair and reduce cartilage and bone pains
  • Reduction of pain and swelling in the body joints

Roughly 10 percent of patients who receive this treatment will notice very quick improvement of pain reduction and swelling in the affected areas. Since 1997, laser therapy has helped thousands of people lead healthy lives. For those worried about the pain level involved in this treatment, do not worry. Laser therapy is not painful and is described as a warm feeling on the skin.

Spinal Decompression

Spinal decompression therapy involves stretching the spine using a traction table or similar motorized device, with the goal of relieving back pain and/or leg pain and aid in disk management therapy. This procedure is known as non-surgical decompression therapy. This term has been coined to distinguish the treatment from surgical spinal decompression, which requires non-invasive or invasive surgery.

Nonsurgical spinal decompression is a type of chiropractic treatment utilizing motorized traction, which has the potential to relieve back pain and aid in disk management therapy.

Spinal decompression works by gently stretching the spine, which changes its force and position. This change takes the pressure off the patient’s spinal disks by creating a negative pressure force in the disc. This results in bulging or herniated disks retraction, which in turn takes the pressure off their nerves and other musculature.

This, when combined with manual chiropractic treatments on the flexion table helps promote movement of blood to the disks for optimal healing. Book an appointment for this treatment with the best chiropractor in Coquitlam.

Intramuscular Stimulation

Intramuscular stimulation, also known as dry needling, is an intense therapy that can be described as a form of invasive procedure. This treatment involves either one or a series of acupuncture needles that are inserted into specific areas of the skin and muscle.

Intramuscular stimulation treatment is a physical intervention that utilizes dry needles which are used to stimulate the body’s trigger points as well as to diagnose and treat intramuscular and nerve-related pain. IMS is also found to be effective at rehabilitating the body’s mobility and function.

Our physiotherapists at Evergreen Rehab and Wellness practice intramuscular stimulation as part of their medical practice and utilize these treatments in conjunction with other psychotherapeutic treatments. While some people think IMS is a form of acupuncture, it does not have its roots in traditional Chinese Medicine. Rather, this treatment is based on specific anatomical locations of myofascial trigger points that can be found in the soft tissues and nerves of the muscles.

Intramuscular stimulation uses acupuncture needles which are used to target specific muscle and tissue groups that, for one reason or another, have become contracted and shortened. These newly shortened muscles/tissues will compress, which then irritates the body’s nervous system. IMS treatment is utilized to greatly reduce tightness and pain which can then relax the muscles and increases the body's range of movement.

IMS involves the insertion of needles into problem areas of the body without injecting anything. The acupuncture sites can be targeted at the site of taut, painful muscle bands, and/or can be near the spine where the nerve root may have become irritated and super-sensitive.
