Types of massage treatments we offer

At Evergreen Rehab and Wellness our trained staff of chiropractors, physiotherapists and RMTs allow us to offer people looking for active rehabilitation in Surrey or Coquitlam a wide variety of massage treatments.

  • Swedish Massage

The Swedish Massage is the most widely practiced type of massage. It is a relaxing treatment designed to increase circulation using techniques to manipulate the soft tissues of the body. The many benefits of Swedish massage include generalized relaxation, dissolution of scar tissue adhesions, and enhances circulation which regulates and improves many bodily functions like promoting cell growth and enhancing organ functions. For people who wear medical braces and suffer from stiffness or soreness as a result will often find Swedish massages effective. Those who suffer from foot or back pain and wear custom orthotics may also find a Swedish massage beneficial in relieving tension.

Swedish massage at Evergreen Rehab and Wellness in both Surrey/Guildford or Burnaby/Coquitlam/Lougheed are used during therapeutic treatments to help the patient relax and thus decrease stress within both their body and mind. Our Chiropractic and RMT professionals perform the massage with rhythmical, slow movements with mild to moderate pressure. The Swedish Massage technique is used as an introductory approach at the start of most treatments. A liberal amount of oil is applied and our RMT uses massage techniques that run parallel to the muscle fibers.

  • Sports Massages

Sports massage is a form of physiotherapy geared toward athletes, both casual and professional, as well as anyone who works out regularly. Sports massages are used primarily to prepare a person’s body for athletic activity and to help athletes recover from workouts and injuries. Sports massage has three basic forms: pre-event massage, post-event massage, and maintenance massage.

Our Surrey/Guildford or Burnaby/Coquitlam/Lougheed centers feature, in addition to talented physiotherapists and Chiropractors, sports massage therapists that specialize in helping treat athletic related injuries. Our sports massage experts are on hand to help deal with long term pain relief and aid in a patient's active rehabilitation. Additionally, the varied health benefits are geared towards athletes such as improved circulation and the decrease in the stiffness/soreness of muscles and soft tissue that can occur during post workout.

  • Deep Tissue Massages

A deep tissue massage utilizes physical manipulation to treat sub layers of muscles, ligaments, joints and fascia. Deep tissue massage are used to treat chronic muscle pain and aid in a patient's physical rehabilitation. Additionally deep tissue massages reduce pain and inflammation of the joints and muscles caused by both tendonitis and arthritis. Whereas Swedish massage focuses on relaxing of superficial musculature, deep tissue manipulates the web of connective tissue that surrounds, and supports the muscles.

At Evergreen Rehab and Wellness our registered massage therapist will alternate pressures and styles based on an individualized treatment plan to give our patients the most effective care. Deep tissue massages can be complemented with physiotherapy or chiropractic treatment at either our Surrey/Guildford or Burnaby/Coquitlam/Lougheed locations to ensure the most effective relief and recovery

  • Pin and Stretch

Pin and stretch is a common and popular technique used for relieving pain and easing tension in the bodies limbs. Pin and stretch forms the fundamental physical movements of many common treatments used in other manual therapies.

Here at Evergreen Rehab and Wellness we utilize the pin and stretch technique as a very direct technique to eliminate central areas of pain found in muscular bands (known as knots). At both our Surrey/Guildford andBurnaby/Coquitlam/Lougheed centers our patients are stretched to help release the tensions and then pressure is applied to the trigger points. Trigger points can be located all over the body, but the most common issues in people arise in their upper body and back points. At Evergreen Rehab and Wellness our pin and stretch therapy is applied with fingertips to small areas, and elbows to larger muscle groups like the gluteal region.

  • Pregnancy Massage (Pre and Post-natal)

Massage therapy during pregnancy is a very effective treatment for women who are experiencing pain that's often centered on the bodies ligaments, especially those found in the hip and lower back. For the many women who experience sacral pain in their first and second trimester this form of massage therapy is extremely useful at relieving pain and tension. In addition, during pregnancy a breast massage is helpful for aiding chest circulation and to fight tightness and congestion in the upper body.

Post pregnancy massage is shown to help new mothers to deal with pain associated from holding and nursing a baby for long periods of time. Here at Evergreen Rehab and Wellness in Surrey/Guildford andBurnaby/Coquitlam/Lougheed we believe pregnancy massages are an effective way for relaxing new mothers muscles as they adjust to new stresses and lack of sleep.

  • Micro-Fascial release

Micro- Fascial release is a form of massage therapy that is used to treat a variety of skeletal and muscle mobility problems in addition to relieving pain by relaxing contracted muscles. The goal of this therapy is to improve blood and lymphatic circulation as well as stimulating the bodies muscles.

Myofascial release a non invasive, physical technique designed to make a functional change in both the patients soft and connective tissue. The three major therapeutic techniques involve compression, shearing and a circular torque.

Our massage experts here at Evergreen Rehab and Wellness in Surrey/Guildford and Burnaby/Coquitlam/Lougheed centers utilize these micro-fascial techniques to penetrate deep into our patients muscles to bring them relief. One example of a proven micro fascial treatment is skin rolling. This is where the skin is pulled away from muscular contents using deep massage techniques. At Evergreen the goal of a micro-fascial release to break down “knots” in the body causing pain in muscles, keloid scars, and skin.

It should be warned that this massage therapy can be quite painful if used intensely so we recommend passive stretching before and after. Due to the intensity of the micro fascial massage we recommend booking a Swedish massage for after the deep myofascial release. We believe this is necessary to ensure a patient's body enjoys the full experience of the massage and is not injured. Micro fascial release massages are very useful to directly break down “knots”, improve limb and joint function, and to alleviate pain.

  • Petrissage

Petrissage are massage movements that apply deep and compressing pressure to a patient's underlying musculature. At Evergreen Rehab and Wellness our healthcare professionals accomplish petrissage through kneading, wringing, skin rolling and pick-up-and-squeeze techniques. These massage techniques aid in pain relief and help patients pursue an active rehabilitation. All of these massage therapy techniques are performed with the padded surface of the hand, the surface of the fingertips and thumbs.

  • Reflexology

Alternatively known as zone therapy, reflexology treatment involves application of pressure to the feet and hands with specific thumb, finger and hand motions. This massage is performed without the use of oil or lotion. The technique is based on the bodies natural system of zones and reflex areas that reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands. Reflexology is actually a different practice than tradition RMT as reflexology focuses pressure on specific areas of the body like the feet, hands or ears. Massage therapy on the other hand is more general and refers to the manipulation of soft tissue and the treatment occurs across the full body.

Here at Evergreen Rehab and Wellness our reflexology sessions last 60 minutes and will include a personal assessment. In both our Surrey/Guildford and Burnaby/Coquitlam/Lougheed locations, we pride ourselves on our customized reflexology treatments to meet our patients needs. However, unlike other massage treatments traditionally in reflexology each treatment is concentrated on either your feet, hands or ears but not all areas.
