The importance of good posture is widely notable as it supports good health. There is a direct relationship between the way we stand or sit and our overall health. Poor posture can directly lead to back pain, neck pain, knee pain, joint pain, and generally poor health. It’s not just your appearance that is affected. Having a poor posture can have a direct impact on your daily life.

Good posture is vital for more than just our physical appearance; it can directly affect our health and well-being. Proper posture is essential when standing, sitting down, lying down, and even when we are in recovering stage. All of these positions require good spinal alignment.

You may not be aware that having a poor posture puts you at risk for back, neck pain, or shoulder pain. And, when this happens, you’re spine isn’t in the proper position, there will be a compression in your discs, which puts pressure on the nerves and muscles surrounding your spine. When this occurs, you can experience pain anywhere from your hips to your shoulders.

At Evergreen Rehab and Wellness, we value your posture and your overall health. We have licensed Kinesiologists to work on your posture analysis which is essential to get started with your posture improvements. You will go through a series of tests to check postural patterns while you are in different positions.

Why Good Posture is Important?

Good posture refers to the correct or neutral alignment of your body. It is a person’s proper position while standing, sitting, or even when lying down. Attaining correct posture involves training the body to hold itself while having a lesser strain on muscles and ligaments while moving.

The key to a correct posture is having the proper alignment of your spine – it should maintain the three natural curves at your neck, mid-back, and low-back.

And, if your posture is out of alignment, it can lead to poor posture that causes musculoskeletal pain such as neck or back pain. It can also cause muscle or joint strain. Also, poor posture can cause possible injury during your workout or while performing weight-bearing activities. Good posture is not only vital for appearance, but also it can help to boost your self-confidence.

Common Types of Poor Posture

Unnoticeably, you may develop a habit of posture problems. For example, you may spend long hours leaning on your desktop or mobile phone screen or slouching while watching TV. In the long run, those unhealthy posture habits can lead to common posture problems.

And below are among the common types of posture problems.

  • Forward head: The ones who spend more time leaning towards your phone’s screen, or spending most of the time on computers or slouching may commonly suffer from having a forward head. In this type of posture, the neck slants forward while the head is in front of the shoulders. In a proper posture, the head should be above the shoulders. There can be more serious effects if you continue to lean your head more forward. With a forward head, it can lead to severe neck pain and headache.
  • Kyphosis: A posture problem in which there is a forward rounding of the back is known as Kyhopsis. It is noticeable that there is an increased front-to-back curve within the upper spine. It commonly occurs to older, but take note that these may occur at any age.
  • Swayback: Another common postural issue is Swayback. You can observe that there slight rounding of the shoulders, having an extended neck, flattened lower back, and the pelvis and hips are pushed forward.
  • Flat-back: In this type of posture problem, you may observe that the normal curve of the lower spine of an individual loses or reduced its curvature. Thus, you may feel pain when standing for a long time.

What is Posture Analysis?

Posture analysis involves a quick and simple process of evaluating areas of the body which are out of alignment. It helps to identify posture problems, imbalances, and even muscle weakness.

Among the types of posture, assessment are the manual and the computerized analysis. A manual diagnostic involves observation of the patient’s static posture. It evaluates the posterior, lateral, and anterior views of the posture. The Kinesiologist makes sure that his eyes are set on the level of the areas being evaluated. For a computerized posture analysis, there will be two photographs taken from the patients. The software analyzes these images and detects the extra forces exerted on the neck or lower back and weight distribution.

After a Posture Analysis, What’s Next?

With a posture analysis performed by a Kinesiologist, you can get valuable information on how to correct your posture.

If the results show that you have a posture problem, the good news is that it can get back to its neutral position. The results of posture assessment are vital for the posture correction program. Our Kinesiologists at Evergreen Rehab and Wellness will provide you with a set of stretches and exercises that can help in bringing back your posture into its neutral position.

Who May Undergo a Posture Assessment?

There is no restriction for anyone to go for posture analysis. Anyone can make this assessment to get to know about the position of his or her body. As mentioned earlier, bad habits like leaning your head on your mobile phone’s screen can cause misalignment in your posture. Posture analysis is essential to change those bad habits and prevent serious posture problems in the long run.
