What Are Common Sport Injuries?

Many Canadians like sports and physical activity, which improves their health. Active engagement can cause injury. The variety of sports performed in Canada and their intensity levels explain some of the most prevalent sports injuries. This section will discuss common sports injuries, including research and reports on their prevalence and impact.

  • Sprains and strains: These muscle and ligament injuries are common in sports. Strains harm muscles or tendons, while sprains rupture ligaments. Soccer, hockey, and basketball, which entail quick direction changes, jumping, and contact, often cause these injuries. Sprains and strains emerged as the predominant type of injury, accounting for 51% of cases, while fractures and broken bones were the second most common, representing 17%.
  • Sport-related concussions: Contact sports like hockey and football are prone to concussions in Canada. A hit, blow, or jolt to the head causes a concussion. According to the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine, around 1 in 450 Canadians aged 12 and older identified sport-related concussions or other brain injuries as their most impactful injury leading to disability in the previous year. Specifically, for the period of 2017–2018, the rate was estimated at 221 per 100,000 population, with a 95% confidence interval ranging from 179 to 264.
  • Fractures: Skiing, snowboarding, and cycling can cause many bone fractures. They can range from tiny cracks to full breaks and require extensive healing. Broken bones are the biggest cause of sports-related hospitalizations; thus, high-risk sports require protective gear and safety precautions.
  • Overuse Injuries: Overuse ailments like tennis elbow, swimmer’s shoulder, and runner’s knee occur from overuse without rest. Repeated-motion sports injuries require appropriate technique, equipment, and recovery.
  • Ligament Injuries: Soccer and basketball, which include rapid stops and spins, are prone to ligament injuries like ACL tears. The ACL is essential for knee stability, and damage can be severe. ACL injuries are common in sports communities and require specialized preventative strategies.

  • Registered Massage Therapy: Promoting deep muscle and tissue relaxation, increasing circulation, and facilitating the body’s natural healing process, registered massage therapy (RMT) is an essential component of holistic therapy. Athletes who are wanting to get away from muscle strains, reduce stiffness, and enhance flexibility will find this therapy to be especially effective.
  • Physiotherapy: Evergreen Rehab & Wellness Physiotherapy restores movement and function after injuries. Individualized exercise, manual treatment, and body mechanics education can help in treating sports injuries, improving performance, and avoiding future injuries.

Pretty good RMT (registered massage therapy) experience. They do direct billing to 1 provider. Location can be a bit hard to find at first. Can park in the underground parking lot. When you walk back up the parking lot ramp, Evergreen is on the right past the 504 sign.

Suji Hong, the acupuncturist, is the best I’ve ever known. I had foot injuries that lasted for a couple of months, but after receiving three sessions of needle treatments from her, the pain is gone! She is very professional and caring, and she pinpoints the exact areas where I have issues. If you are looking for a trustworthy acupuncturist in town, I would highly recommend her :)

Sarah Park is the best kinesiologist I have ever experienced. Always impressed by her superlative job of providing best solutions and delivering the immaculate sessions. It's easy to feel that she is very knowledgeable, passionate and caring. Having an amazing experience with Sarah has led me to switch from other clinic that I have been taking physio to take physio sessions at Evergreen.
