Radial Shockwave Therapy
Radial shockwave therapy is a non-surgical technique, making it an ideal therapy for those looking for a healing process that does not require invasive procedures. A major benefit of radial shockwave therapy is that patients do not need to rely on painkillers, as this treatment helps heal the body naturally. Shockwave therapy is also used to speed up recovery and relieve symptoms causing acute or chronic pain. At Evergreen Rehab and Wellness we use our shockwave therapy device to compliment our Chiropractic and other manual therapies at both our Surrey and Coquitlam/Lougheed centers. At our facilities we focus our radial shockwave therapy on fast pain relief and mobility restoration.
For those unfamiliar with this form of therapy, a shockwave device is an instrument that releases an acoustic wave that blasts painful spots and myoskeletal tissues with high frequency energy. This energy promotes regeneration and reparative processes of the bones, tendons and other soft tissues. For more information on the benefits of radial shockwave therapy please click here.
The shockwave therapy device is characterized by a jump change in pressure, high amplitude and non-periodicity. While there are a variety of shockwave therapy devices available, at Evergreen Rehab and Wellness we use the Swiss Dolorclast Radial Shockwave Device. What Are The Benefits Of Radial Shockwave Therapy?
Radial shockwave therapy has many health benefits. By using high frequency acoustic waves to interact with tissue our healthcare professionals can improve and accelerate tissue repair, aid in cell growth, and help our patients regain their mobility. Specifically, radial shockwave therapy can be used to aid in:
New Blood Vessel Formation
New blood vessel formations allows the body to increase the nutrients in the blood flow which is necessary in facilitating the repair of damaged tissue. Through the use of acoustic waves we are able to create micro ruptures in both the tendon and bone. As a result the arterioles are remodeled and stimulated to grow. Alongside this new arterioles are formed. These new blood vessels improve blood supply and oxygenation of the treated area and support faster healing of both the tendon and the bone.
Elimination of Calcium Buildup
Radial shockwave therapy is a proven technique in eliminating calcium build up in the bodies arteries and blood vessels. Calcium build-up is most often a result of micro-tears or other trauma to a tendon. Acoustic waves break up the existing calcifications. Shockwave therapy starts the biochemical decalcification of the calcium build-up and treats the tendon. The granular particles of calcium are then removed by the lymphatic system.
Reversal of Chronic inflammation
Radial shockwave therapy can be used to reduce joint and muscle inflation and aid in the active recovery of those suffering from chronic pain and inflammation. Chronic inflammation happens when the body's inflammatory response is not working at peak capacity. When this occurs, it can damage healthy tissue, resulting in chronic pain. A type of cell called mast cells, is one of the body’s key components in dealing with the inflammatory process. By stimulating these cells one can speed up healing. Mast cell activation is followed by the production of chemokines and cytokines which are pro-inflammatory compounds. These chemicals enhance the inflammatory process and help to restore the body’s normal healing and regenerative processes. Their activity may be increased by using pervasive acoustic waves. At Evergreen Rehab and Wellness we use the Dolorclast Radial Shockwave Device to stimulate these cells at both our Surrey/Guildford and Burnaby/Coquitlam/Lougheed locations.
Dispersion of Pain Medicator known as Substance P
Substance P is a neurotransmitter that mediates pain information through C-fibers and can be treated with radial shockwave therapy. This neuropeptide is generally associated with long lasting, intense and chronic pain. Substance P’s job in the body is to relay pain messages to the body's central nervous system, like messengers. By lowering the concentration of Substance P in a body we can reduce a patient's chronic pain. Alongside Substance P through this shockwave therapy treatment we can reduce histamines and inflammatory oedema. At Evergreen Rehab and Wellness by using Acoustic waves generated by our Dolorclast Radial Shockwave therapy device we can lower the Substance P concentration and trigger pain relief in many patients.
Simulation of Collagen Production
At Evergreen Rehab and Wellness we use our Dolorclast Radial Shockwave to aid in the body’s production of collagen. Collagen is necessary in order to repair damaged limbs, joints , ligaments and musculature. Radial shockwave therapy accelerates the body’s growth of collagen producing cells. The treatment then forces newly created collagen fibers to begin supporting and strengthening tendons.
Release of Trigger Points
Radial shock therapy utilizes the body’s trigger points in order to achieve fast acting pain relief. This technique focuses on trigger points because they are the most common cause of pain in the back, neck, shoulder and limbs. Trigger points are associated with physical nodules found in the taut bands of muscle fibers. The dysfunctional musculature can contract so tightly that they begin to restrict their own blood supply. This can cause excess waste products to build up in the body. To remedy this we use a radial shock therapy technique that will deliver acoustic energy that unblocks the bodies calcium pumps and thus reverses the contractions and releases the trigger points.
What is the Swiss Dolorclast Radial Shockwave Device
At Evergreen Rehab and Wellness we are proud to offer The EMS Swiss DolorClast device for all our patients radial shockwave therapy needs. The Dolorclast is a device that emits a shock wave in a series of single acoustic pulses characterized by a fast rise to heavy pressure followed by a rapid drop in pressure. These pulses are delivered to the affected area from a point of contact at the skin surface. The Swiss DolorClast is used by our health care professionals at our Surrey/Guildford and Burnaby/Coquitlam/Lougheed locations.
Our radial shockwave experts utilize the Dolorclast’s single acoustic pressure waves to treat musculoskeletal and dermatological problems. Through this device we are proud to offer two technology solutions to your bodies problems. The first propagation of radial and/or focused shock waves and the second is to optimize treatment results for pain relief and rehabilitation.
The Swiss DolorClast provides an important non-surgical alternative for patients looking for treatment of their chronic proximal plantar fasciitis. For patients 18 years of age or older who have suffered with their foot symptoms for over six months and a history of unsuccessful treatment we could recommend this procedure. Chronic proximal plantar fasciitis is defined as heel pain in the area of the plantar fascia.
Summary of Clinical Trials
A multi-center, randomized, placebo-controlled, prospective, double-blind clinical study was conducted with two groups: a group receiving radial shockwave therapy with the EMS Swiss Dolorclast and a control group receiving a placebo treatment. A total of 251 patients, randomized in a 1:1 allocation ratio, were treated at eight clinical sites. For the purpose of this study, chronic proximal plantar fasciitis was defined as painful tenderness localized at the inferomedial aspect of the calcaneal tuberosity close to the insertion area of the plantar fascia that had persisted for at least six months prior to study enrollment. The results of the clinical study provide assurance that the EMS Swiss Dolorclast is safe and effective. The results were positive for patients who received the treatment with the EMS Swiss Dolorclast. Especially patients suffering with symptoms of proximal plantar fasciitis of at least 6 months duration who had failed previous conservative therapy.
